Summary

Level lifetimes for the low-Ω πh9/2 and πh13/2 intruder bands in 179Ir up to spin 37/2 and 49/2, respectively, have been determined using the recoil-distance and Doppler-shift attenuation methods.

The results reveal that transition quadrupole moments of the band are almost 30% larger than those of the band. Furthermore, there is no indication of rotational stretching. Lifetime results and total Routhian surface calculations are discussed in conjunction with the deformation-driving effects of the different proton orbitals.
